Travel Basketball Frequently Asked Questions
1. What kind of time commitment does Travel Basketball require?
Practices will begin in late September or early October and lead up to the first tournament in early December, with regular season and playoffs to follow. The Regular Season runs from late December through late March, should your child’s team advance to the Championship game. During the season, there are usually two practices per week, possibly more depending on Gym Availability. The teams practice at Sandy Run, Maple Glen, Upper Dublin High School, and Temple Barn Gym on the Ambler Campus.
2. How is the basketball age group determined?
Typically, By Grade, however, ICBA Rules require that Eligibility to participate is based first on the age-determining date. August 1st shall be the determining date for the age of the basketball players.
3. How are the Travel teams selected?
Two or three closed tryouts (practices) will be conducted with a selection committee present. Players must attend at least one tryout to be considered for the team. Like last year, we will be inviting Coaches from the Boys and Girls High School Teams to assist in the Evaluation and Team Selection Process. Per ICBA Rules, UDJAA will be allowing a maximum of two out of Township Players to play on each Team, known as “Player Exceptions.”
4. What happens if my child doesn’t make the team?
You will have the option to sign your child up for the Recreational League.
5. Is there guaranteed playing time?
This is competitive basketball, and one of the main goals is to field and play in competitive games with the goal of making the Playoffs and winning the Championship. League rules typically do not require each child to play; however, UDJAA requires that each player get an average of five (5) minutes per game for grades 6th-8th Grade and an average of one Quarter per game for the 3rd through 5th Grade Teams. If the team qualifies for the ICBA playoffs, once the playoffs begin, there is no guaranteed playing time. Please understand this is an average playing time goal; if, in a particular game, a Coach doesn’t meet the playing time goal, the Coach will look to make up the time in a future game.
6. How many games are there, and where are they located?
There are teams located from Royersford to New Hope. Some games will be very local, but others may require some travel. The League typically has 12 regular-season games starting in January, running through February; however, the league may begin regular-season games in December. Playoffs start at the end of February, and the league is usually completed by the third weekend in March. UDJAA plays in the Inter-County Basketball League (click for more about ICBA). Teams will also have the opportunity to play in two additional tournaments. One is the Pre-Season Tournament that all teams participate in, and the second can be chosen by the individual team.
7. Spectator Policy – UDJAA Adheres to the ICBA Spectator Policy. In addition, Parents and Guardians are required to sign off on the UDJAA Code of Conduct when signing their child for Travel Basketball.
“ICBA Spectator Conduct Policy: Disruptive or unruly behavior while attending an Inter-County Basketball Association event will not be tolerated. Any person (s) in attendance at an ICBA game whose actions result in ejection will be expected to leave the facility and will be suspended for two games after the first ejection. Any person (s) who is ejected a second time will be suspended for the remainder of the season, including the playoffs. The refereeing official (s) of the event are expected to issue a warning to the person (s) through one of the coaches who are involved in the game. The team or organization that the attendee is affiliated with will be told of the warning through that coach. After a warning has been issued, the next course of action will result in removal from the event. The organization that is attached to that person (s) will be expected to make sure this rule is enforced. Ignoring this rule will result in forfeiture of all remaining games for the team participating in the game. Everyone, from the players, coaches, officials, and scorekeepers, is performing to the best of their ability. Please remember that when attending a sporting event played by young people, you are at a venue where the expectation is to have a safe place for children to play a sporting event. Cheer for the team or player (s) you support, respect all of the participants, and after the game, exit the venue and have a great day!”
